Best museums in Lithuania

A Trafalgar Lithuania travel experience will take you through the country’s best museums and galleries, from discovering ancient art to the dark history of the KGB Museum in Vilnius.

Lithuanian Art Museum

With around 2,500 paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, and over 33,000 works spanning the 20th century, the Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius is home to Lithuania’s largest art collection. Discover sculpture from the 14th century, watercolour, photography and over 8,000 drawings by European and international artists.

Museum of Genocide Victims

Also known as the KGB Museum, this museum documents the dark history of the occupations of Lithuania. It’s housed in the former gymnasium that was both a Gestapo and KGB headquarters during subsequent periods, and you can learn about the Lithuanian resistance and see the original prison cells and torture chambers.

National Museum of Lithuania

Discover over 800,000 items from Lithuania’s history, ranging from Neolithic times to the modern era. You’ll find 7th century grave hauls, arrowheads from the 2nd millennium, and the velvet sleds and ornate furniture of past Lithuanian aristocracy. There’s also a wonderful folk traditions room, with floral furnishings and carved wooden crosses.

Best food in Lithuania

Influenced by its cold climate, Lithuanian cuisine is warm and filling. And our trips will have you sampling it all, feasting on potatoes, meats, dumplings, soups, rye bread and even tiny doughnuts.

Cepelinai (potato dumplings)

Hailed as Lithuania’s national dish, cepelinai are large dumplings stuffed with boiled potatoes, pork, dry curd cheese or mushrooms. Doused in sour cream and bacon, and served with more fried potatoes, these are a delicious Lithuanian specialty.

Spurgos (Lithuanian doughnuts)

These tiny bite-sized doughnuts are the perfect dessert after a day of adventure. The doughnuts are deep-fried, then filled with a mix of pastry cream and poppy seeds, and dusted with icing sugar. One of the most popular traditional desserts, you can’t miss this Lithuanian delight.

Grybukai (mushroom cookies)

Contrary to the name, grybukai are not made from mushrooms. They’re little cookies made from cinnamon, butter, nutmeg, cloves and cardamom and shaped like mushrooms, with a glazed white ‘stalk’ and black ‘cap’. Our Local Specialists will show the best bakeries to try a few of these sweet treats.

Warm clothes

Even in Summer, the temperature in Estonia rarely passes 18 degrees Celsius. When you’re strolling the streets all day, a jacket is an item of clothing you won’t want to go without.

From the grand Vilnius Cathedral to the magical pine forests and powdery white beaches, Lithuania is a photographer’s dream.

Waterproof coat

Lithuania experiences rain all year round, including a wet summer season, so pack a raincoat or small umbrella to keep dry.

A good pair of UV protected sunglasses are essential throughout the year - even in winter when sun rays reflect from the gleaming white snow.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Lithuania is 220V and the sockets are of Type F, with standard European 2-pin plugs.
